Where to learn Yorùbá – online

  1. Amazing Talker

Amazing Talker is a paid-for platform; prices start at around $10.  It’s got a slick, user-friendly interface; when you arrive at the homepage you will be asked to select your learning goals. These could be, for example, for conversation; to help your children learn Yorùbá; for business purposes and so on. The site uses artificial intelligence to match you up with the best teacher, based on your responses to a few initial questions.

  1. Live Lingua Project

This free platform has some great resources to get you started including ebooks, audio and a guide to Yorùbá pronunciation. There are two promoted Yorùbá courses: FSI Yorùbá basic course and the FSI Yorùbá intermediate course.

  1. Utalk

According to the website, Utalk is used by over 30 million people, so it is worth a try. Notable features on the site are game-based learning, the ability to practise with native Yorùbá speakers, exercises that cover everyday situations, and an audio facility to help you check your Yorùbá pronunciation.

  1. Nalingo Naija

This is another great resource that uses high-quality sketches to act out everyday situations in Nigeria, using subtitles to help you understand what is being said. Here is flavour of what you get:

  1. Yorùbá Lessons with Adérónké̩

This is a superb resource by an accomplished Yorùbá speaker. She has a charming manner and goes through each video at a slow-enough pace to understand the vital elements. You will find videos on parts of speech, figures of speech and colloquialisms. Here’s a taste of what’s on offer.

A truly wonderful site that does much more than teach the language – history, culture, tradition and much more are included. Explore the site here.

7. Ayekoo Afrique

Have we saved the best till last? You decide. Ayekoo Afrique was “created with the primary interest of making the learning of African languages an easy task to people such as Africans in the Diaspora, African Americans who although living outside the African continent share a connection with us by reason of ancestry, culture, and relationships.
