Museum of Islamic Art
Might not be the most famous tourist attraction in Egypt, but definitely one to see. Housing over one hundred thousand antique Islamic artefacts, the Museum of Islamic Art is thought to be the largest museum of its kind. Situated in the Bab Al-Khalq district in the middle of historic Cairo, the museum plays host to Islamic artefacts from all over the world. Visitors to the museum can view a collection covering all branches of Islamic art throughout the ages. Khedive Abbas Helmy II constructed the current building in 1903.
Pyramids of Giza
One of the first things visitors to Egypt think of and known as the last remaining wonder of the ancient world, the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx must be close to the top of many bucket lists. The entire complex was built during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom of Ancient Egypt and the pyramids were royal tombs for three different pharaohs, Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure. The pyramids close proximity to Greater Cairo ensures that it is easily accessible to tourists. Visitors can also enter each of the three pyramids, but it is wise to book tickets ahead of time as the pyramids are one of the most visited tourist attractions in Egypt.
Valley of the Kings
Situated just west of the river Nile in upper Egypt, the Valley of the Kings was part of the ancient city of Thebes. The valley was used as a burial site for most of the pharaohs during the 18th, 19th and 20th dynasties. Many of the tomb walls are covered with painted and sculptured scenes showing the pharaohs in the presence of deities. UNESCO designated the valley a World Heritage Site in 1979.
Abydos
Those looking to get off the beaten track should definitely add Abydos to their list. Known as one of the oldest ancient Egyptian cities, Abydos is thought to be one of the most important archaeological sites in the country. The city is known as a royal cemetery to pharaohs of the 1st and 2nd dynasties. The first structure visitors to Abydos will see is the Temple of Seti I, one of the most complete and beautiful temples in Egypt.
Khan El-Khalili
Tourists looking for something a little different should be sure to visit Khan El-Khalili, a famous souq in historic Cairo built in the fourteenth century. It is made up of distinct areas where tourists and locals can find almost anything, from jewellery and antiques to souvenirs. Many craftsmen have workshops in the souqs courtyards and upper floors where they make products sold on site. In addition to the shopping, you can also enjoy an Arabian coffee in one of the many traditional coffeehouses.
