Whilst a thick moisturiser can work wonders for dry skin, sometimes you just want that extra luxury. Enter the Moroccan Spa experience or a hammam. This ancient beauty treatment will leave your skin silky smooth and you in a state of pure relaxation. A holiday to Morocco just for a spa treatment sounds like the dream, but if you can’t quite hop on a plane every time you want soft skin, fear not – the hammam experience can be easily recreated at home.
Hammams date back to the Roman and Ottoman Empires, with public bathing the only way to get clean they were essential spaces for hygiene and for socialising. Hammams were a staple across North Africa, with an abundance of choices and locations. Nowadays with the advent of baths and showers in people’s homes they are no longer ‘in vogue’, and sadly many of the old hammams have fallen into disrepair. But the cultural significance of hammams in Morocco have never quite disappeared and with the boom in the wellness industry, the Moroccan Spa experience has gone global.
To experience a Moroccan spa at home, follow these easy steps:
What You’ll Need
- Sabon Beldi (Moroccan black soap)
- An exfoliating mitt
- Argan oil or a body oil of your choice
- Rhassoul Clay (if you cannot source this, any other clay suitable for skin is fine)
Method
- You’ll want to start by making your bathroom into a steam room to open up your pores. Make sure all windows are closed, place a towel to block the gap under the door and turn the shower onto the hottest setting. Relax in the steam for as long as you can handle.
- After you’re done steaming, rinse off under the shower at a temperature you can tolerate.
- Cover your body with the Sabon Beldi, let this sit and soak into your skin for ten minutes.
- Grab your exfoliating mitt and rub in circular motions all over your body. Don’t worry if you see dead skin falling off at this point, it’s all part of the process!
- Rinse yourself off and apply a layer of the Rhassoul clay, relax for the next five minutes as it works its magic.
- Rinse again and pat yourself dry.
- Rub the argan oil all over your body, paying extra attention to the knees and elbows.
- Finally sit back and relax, enjoy your silky soft skin and appreciate the ancient Moroccan beauty secrets.
Pro Tips – Think of playing some soothing tunes during the treatment to relax you even further. Always hydrate after the treatment, this will help with skin softness too!
